Having never met Alberto before, Laura was taken aback by his sense of humour with his “I see you” gesture. He then greeted us with a big hug as if we were old friends on the street outside before our tour of our first ever bodega Perez Barquero. Our review of that visit can be […]

On the 1st day of PXmas two strangers, now dear friends, opened a door to a new wine region Montilla-Moriles. Read about how it started here. Alberto & Rafa, we will be forever grateful for your kindness and introduction to a hidden gem of the wine world, Montilla-Moriles the home of Pedro Ximénez. See you in March! […]
Starting Christmas Day join us on our journey through the 12 days of PXmas……..
It is fair to say that social media has been very instrumental in the journey we have been on with Montilla-Moriles. We have made friends for life and have experienced several things that will live long in our memories. Having connected with our guest reviewer, Tim Needham through #ukwinehour on Twitter, and realising his passion for […]
Our return to Montilla on the 4th September 2016 was with mixed emotions. We love returning there but this time it had added anticipation, unknown expectations and a little trepidation. During our visit earlier this year in May when we visited the Consejo Regulador and met with Director Enrique Garrido Giménez and Technical Auditor Miguel […]
This evening sees the start of the harvest in the Denominación de Origen Montilla-Moriles, traditionally the 1st in Europe. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo and Moscatel will be the first varieties harvested which will produce the first musts of 2016. These are followed by the red varieties with the native Pedro Ximenez variety the last harvested. Early indications […]
Perez Barquero S.A. in Montilla was our 1st ever bodega visit in September 2014 and the review of our visit can be found here. This is the 3rd wine we have reviewed from Perez Barquero having previously reviewed the Fresquito Pedro Ximénez 2014 and the Gran Barquero Fino. Official Tasting Notes This is a generoso dry Amontillado wine using […]
Why Bodegas Málaga Virgen? Before we go any further, many of you may be wondering why we are featuring a bodega located in the neighbouring Málaga D.O. Bodegas Málaga Virgen is also registered with the Montilla Moriles D.O. as it produces and ages wines in a Solera brought from Montilla in the 1950’s, their Fino […]
We recently posted a review of our fascinating visit in May 2016 to Bodegas Robles, which can be found here. At the end of our tour and tasting, Francisco presented us with a bottle of the Pedro Ximénez Selección de Robles 1927 Oro to takeaway, enjoy and review at our leisure. Bodegas Robles is one of the few wineries that still […]
Perez Barquero in Montilla will always have a special place in our heart. It was the first bodega that we had the pleasure of visiting in the region in September 2014. Our review of that visit in September 2014 can be found here. For non Spanish speakers, Barquero is Spanish for boatman and that is reflected in their […]
In researching Bodegas Cruz Conde as part of that review we learnt that they have something very unique in the region, a subterranean ageing cellar called “El Sotano” – “The Basement” with it’s stunning architecture. We were intrigued and had to visit. Carolina from Cruz Conde would be our guide and we were also accompanied by Inma from […]
Another of the bottles we brought home from our trip last month was this Fino Eléctrico del Lagar from Bodegas Toro Albalá. Official Tasting Notes Produced using the solera technique from 100% Pedro Ximenez grapes, it is biologically aged for 10 years under a veil of yeast, also known as ‘flor’, with an ABV of 15% […]
