January 2019 Review – Day 3 continues, onto Montilla

After lunch with Isa we collected our rental car and headed south to Montilla. It is about a 35 minte drive from Córdoba. Our accommodation would be a first for us, a room in the boutique house Lujo Pobre which translates as Poor Luxury. We were met by May, the owner, and shown to our room aptly named Pedro Ximénez. This is one of the three rooms in the house that are homage to the wine styles found in Montilla-Moriles. Amontillado and Oloroso are also featured. At Lujo Pobre you have access to the kitchen with a fridge to chill your bodega wine purchases.  Breakfast is cooked for you by May, at a time to suit, with an endless supply of coffee, fruit and pastries. May’s husband, Juan Rafael Portero, is the current President of Bodegas La Aurora which we visited in January 2018 here.

A familiar and welcoming sight for us in Montilla is the statue and fountain of San Francisco Solano.  We walked past it to our first meet up of this trip to Montilla-Moriles with María Alvear. We first met María in January 2018 along with Alvear’s winemaker Berbardo Lucena. This was when we were first introduced to the 2016 3 Miradas range. Our review of the full 2016 3 Miradas range can be found here.

With María Alvear and Bernado Lucena in January 2018

This time the meet up venue was Restaurante Las Camachas and we had another fantastic experience. We were introduced to Álvaro Ruiz Lopez who had recently joined, 2 weeks earlier, the export team of Alvear. We were told that the UK would be one of the markets he would be overseeing. Alfonso appeared just after Maria with a box containing 6 bottles. This was the latest release, at the time, of the 3 Miradas range 2017 vintage made up of the Vino de Pueblo, Cerro Macho and the La Viña de Antoñín (skin contact). The plan was to share a bottle of each with tapas and dinner with the remaining bottles being given to us, very generously, to bring home to Scotland to review at our leisure. We also had the iconic Fino C.B. and Oloroso Asunción. Once again we can’t thank enough María and Alfonso for their wonderful hospitality.
