Gran Barquero Fino en Rama – Autumn Saca 2016
Perez Barquero in Montilla will always have a special place in our heart. It was the first bodega that we had the pleasure of visiting in the region back in September 2014.
Gran Barquero Fino was our second ever Montilla-Moriles wine tasted during this visit. We reviewed that wine here.
As with the Gran Barquero Fino, this en rama version from the Autumn 2016 saca is a generoso Fino wine from 100% Pedro Ximenez grapes with an ABV of 15% with no fortification.
It is biologically aged under a layer of yeast, velo de flor, in a criadera and solera system using American oak casks for 8 to 10 years.

This was the second release in 2016 following a release in Spring 2016 which unfortunately we were unable to secure a bottle of to enjoy and review.
Our Tasting Notes:
Nose: The yeast is to the fore along with walnuts, green apple and a hint of pink grapefruit.
Palate: Dry and very smooth with the sharpness of green apple skin and the walnuts being more prevalant.
Finish: There is a saltiness even a hint of caramel in the finish but again we get the green apple influence.
These notes are based on a wine that has seen at least 4 months of bottle ageing which can change it’s original characteristics.
