This Amontillado is part of the Piedra Luenga organic range of wines produced by Bodegas Robles in Montilla.
The range includes a Verdejo, Tempranillo, Fino, Amontillado, Cream, Pale Cream and Pedro Ximénez.
Pioneers in organic production in Spain, we have been priviledged to visit the bodega numerous times. More of an honour was to see their harvest and the pasera in 2016 of the organic Pedro Ximénez vineyard at Villargallegos near to Santaella.
To quote from the Bodegas Robles website:-
“In order for a vineyard to be classified as organic, we must be able to prove which vine the grapes come from, later the CAAE certifies the vineyard as organic and from that date the ecological practices began”.
We have learned from Francisco Robles from our visits that the cover crops used between the rows of vines help produce a higher quality yeast.
This backgound information is a prelude to our review of their soft and elegant Amontillado.
Made from 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes, with an ABV of 16%, this spends five years biologically ageing under a velo del flor then undertakes three years oxidative ageing.
Our tasting notes:
Nose: Crème brulee, honey with hints of light oak. Then dried fruits come to the fore – raisins and sultanas before the citrus notes of mandarins and sweet grapefruit.
Palate: Mandarin sweetness with a touch of oak, then subtle notes of cloves and nutmeg. Green apples move onto a redcurrant note.
Finish: This has a clean dry woody finish.
Bodegas Robles recommend it as “Excellent as an aperitif and as an accompaniment to fresh and complex dishes such as cod and orange salad. It can be served with cheese platters, trout, and seafood particularly shellfish in general”.
