It’s not a Mystery – Bodegas Lagar Blanco Palo Cortado
Earlier this month we hosted two tastings , one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh of four special wines from Montilla-Moriles.
Today we are going to review the Palo Cortado from Bodegas Lagar Blanco.
The official notes on this wine.
This is a limited production wine, considered a rarity, as it collects the best qualities of the Amontillado and Oloroso wines.
It is made from 100% Pedro Ximenez grapes and has spent at least 19 years in a 50 year old American oak cask criadera & solera system.
Colour: Amber gold
Nose: An outstandingly complex Palo Cortado with bitter and nutty hints and with memories of an apothecary’s shop.
Palate: In mouth, initially it is light Oloroso-like then develops to a sharp & voluptuous velvety mouth feel.
Finish: Sweet and syrupy but dry, nutty with light chocolate and coffee.
Recommended Food Pairings: Aperitifs of cured meats like iberian pork ham & loin; mojama (salt cured tuna) or smoked cod / haddock
How to Serve: Lightly chilled (8 Cº to 12 Cº) in a white wine glass
Overall we agree with most of the official notes above.
On the nose we also get unripe bananas and a hint of yeast with maple syrup on the palate and the finish is definitely very dry.
