Located in the town of Montilla, Bodegas Alvear founded by Diego de Alvear y Escalera in 1729 is the oldest bodega in Andalucia.
Along with Perez Barquero S.A. in Montilla and Bodegas Toro Albalá in Aguilar de la Frontera, Bodegas Alvear is considered as 1 of the big 3 of the bodegas found within the Montilla-Moriles DO.
40% of Alvear’s annual production is exported to more than 25 countries around the world.
They have the capacity to age 5 million litres of wine in oak.
As we were looking for wines to review ahead of our visit next month the opportunity to try an en Rama wine from the Montilla-Moriles DO was too good to miss. We have tried a number Fino and Manzanilla en Ramas from the Sherry DO so this was a great discovery.
The official notes from the Alvear web site on this wine state that it is a 2008 vintage, has an ABV of 15% and confirms that it is made from 100% Pedro Ximenez grapes. It recommends that it is best served at 8 – 10ºC.
“En Rama” means that it is unblended, has not been stabilized and is only lightly filtered to enhance its individuality. This is a unique product, the first ever made “single vintage” Fino in modern history from the Montilla-Moriles DO.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour: Bright pale-straw golden colour.
Nose: Fresh, slightly pungent, somewhat tangy almond like aroma and a touch of fruitiness.
Mouth: Bone dry and quite savoury, this wine presents an elegant style with the typical Montilla grapey character.
Food Pairing: Nice partner for aperitif with tapas, shellfish, fish, cured meats, snacks, hors d’oeuvre and salads. The ultimate partner for Mediterranean and Japanese food.
Our notes : We first tasted this without looking at the bodega’s notes and the nuttiness of the almonds on the nose is very apparent.
It has a fresh delicate yeast on the palate, and is definitely dry but not as dry as some en Ramas we have tried from the Sherry DO.
After trying this we are very happy that we bought a second bottle. Delightfully delicious Fino en Rama.
