We have posted three wine reviews from Lagar Los Raigones, the first was in November last year about the first saca of the Fino Lagar del Cerro from April 17th 2017. Our review of that wine can be found here.
In that review, it was highlighted that the second saca of this wine was to be released in November 2017 and that fingers crossed that we could source a bottle.
Ahead of our trip to Córdoba and Montilla in January we contacted José Antonio Jiménez, their Commercial Director, to ask if they could put a bottle aside and for collection at the lagar when we were due to be in the region in January.
Thankfully that was the case and unscheduled we arrived at the lagar to collect the bottle. It was early evening, just as the January sun was setting.
If anyone is in any doubt as to why we love visiting Montilla-Moriles, here is another one of those memorable experiences that sums it up. José proceeded to give us an impromptu tour of their lagar and premises.
Starting in the tinaja room, we sampled a wine direct from one of the tinajas before heading to the Sacristia. This room is where they display historical artfacts and winemaking tools, host private events and is home to a solera and criadera of fino casks.
Santiago Jiménez Panadero, the founder of Los Ragiones and José’s father-in-law, died in 2015 at the age of 75 had a favourite cask of fino. This cask is the foundation of the Fino Lagar del Cerro sacas or bottlings released in tribute to him.
Lagar Los Raigones, as well as producing wines, also produce olive oil and while we were there they were finishing that day’s pressing. The aromas in the air during this process are both intense and intoxicating.
José then took us into the most modern building of the lagar that houses the bottling facilities and the soleras for their Pedro Ximénez and Amontillado.
We were very honoured to try a very special Gran Amontillado from a cask dating back to 1960. Very special indeed.
Muchos gracias José for making time to show us around. It was very much appreciated and unexpected.
A review of the bottle we bought after the tour can be found here.
Also look out for a review of another memorable experience from here in April featuring a friend from acoss the Irish Sea.
Un fuerte abrazo desde Escocia.
Los Raigones is located in the Sierra de Montilla and has been growing its own crops since 1954.
